Well went to contact one of my local landowners whom I have known for a few years about going out to metal detect and got a very sharp NO!! I was shocked by this as I have always filled my holes and removed all the trash. Matter of fact my father and I located this piece of property and it had once been a farm used during 1840's and had been taken over by the confederate army in 1862 as a camp. The house was used as generals quarters and surrounding fields as camp with adjacent hillsides with entrenchments. All in all there was 160 acres of very rich land to hunt. I would say about 40% of my CW finds I have on here have came from that one piece of land. I did some digging and found out that we weren't the only ones going out there. I had invited a fellow TN member and his buddy out with me on a separate hunt without my father and didn't find much that day. I called him several weeks later to find out that he and other buddy had gone out there and found a few things including a Louisiana pelican button full gilt, cannon frags, and a broken CS plate. I asked why they had gone out there and they stated that they felt since I took them out there that one time that it was ok if they went out without me. All in all I finally got through to landowner and asked him who it was that made him mad and caused all this and he specifically pointed out the fellow detectorist car and physical description stating they had not filled in their holes and that they had left a gate open and one of his calves had gotten out on the RR tracks. Needless to say I basically begged this man to let me and only my father back out there and he said sorry as much as I really like you two guys and all the hard work you have done too many people see yall out there and they want to stop and ask me if its ok and I say no. And also after YOUR buddies came down here and caused such a ruckus I am not allowing it any longer on my property. Needless to say guys. No matter how well you think you know a person and how much you think you can trust them, a lot of guys see what could truly be out there and their greed and temptations set in and ruins it for the rest of us. Let this be a lesson learn.

Sorry to hear about you losing your spot. It's a shame someone would treat your spot so carelessly. Hopefully you will have better luck in the future. Best of luck to you.

Just read the whole thread. Sorry but it's my opinon the whole mess is your fault. The land owner put his trust in you to do right by him in keeping HIS land as you found it. You made a conscious decision to allow someone to go there who clearly didn't respect that. Question.. I let my son borrow my engine hoist awhile back. He then lent it to one of his friends. It came back to me damaged. Who is at fault ? Me or my son ? I hope you choose your friends more wisely in the future.

Like I said, I had no idea of knowing this bone head would show up and I had done a lot of work helping the farmer out by doing welding and helping him with cows and other stuff so we were fairly good friends. The other detectorist took it upon his self while I was not around to go out there on his own without asking me or even asking the landowner if it was alright to go out there. I am the type of person every time I go detect I swing by landowners home and talk to them for a while and see how everything has been for them lately making small talk and building a bond and friendship with them so they know they can trust me. The other guy never once asked and has since got caught going on numbeous other people's sites without them. Needless to say I don't think he post here much anymore.

Not being a relic hunter myself, I personally think you need to out this bonehead so that other TNetters won't get jacked by him.

Several people I'm sure know him on here an a few of my close followers may know by the name. He is a local LEO around here as well. Just creeps the threads with his buddies and reaps from others benefits of good research. Treasure_hunter may remember my convo with him about a year ago about this guy and his associates

Well generally whenever someone is doing it only for the money all they tend to care about is themselves.

Sorry to hear this happened to you CW22. Its a shame really, my hunting buddy and I have had a similar issue happen (not as bad as yours though) and sadly its why we choose not to join clubs any more and try to keep our permissions/hunting spots to ourselves. We had found someone on one of our permissions and confronted the guy asking if he knew the landowner etc. He stated that he had seen us on the lot driving by one day and figured it was okay to hunt their as well. Not a bad guy, just new to the hobby and we had to get him squared away with the rules of the hobby. Needless to say, owner has put up private property/no trespassing signs on that lot now (but luckily he still allows us to hunt there).

Hope you are able to get that permission back down the road some day!
Have a happy new year

Man that really sucks, I normally hunt alone, sometimes when I go back to where I was born I go out with my Brother-in-law. I have contacted a few local guys who detect here on Tnet. I will take them out to places to assist them in learning. I would never go to a site (by myself) that I was invited along to by a fellow dirt fisherman unless I was invited again or the owner made it known that I was welcome to come back solo. Wow you really have to be careful and very selective when inviting friends to hunt on your permissions. Thanks for posting this, I have learned from someone else's mistake.

Yea twoyewts it's definitely been a learning experience. People you think you really know sometimes just can't be trusted. Should have listened to dad and brother and hunted this as a family venture only. I've always hunted alone or with dad and brother but did find these two fellows on here and thought what the heck one is a fellow LEO so why not try them out on a crappy site before taking them to good one. Heck we swapped spots several times and I always respected his sites by filling in all holes and never returning to HIS spots because he gained permission for those and those in my eyes belong to HIM. I didn't realize until after I found all this out that he had been to two other sites of mine and one of them was even on my family land. So guys make sure when you go out with a fellow hunter learn them listen to them and make sure you read what they are really looking for in this hobby. Is it money, is it a hobby, or is it just for exercise. If for the first one make dang sure you don't take them to your special spots.

No comments ! Such bad advertising for our hobby and passion ! It sometimes is difficult to get any permission. But with this kind of attitude, it sure isn't going to be any easier !

Nope. Saddest part about it all is he is supposed to be a model citizen and role model for others being a respected LEO. Sometimes that just don't matter. If u really want to keep a place and make sure you preserve the future for yourself then keep it quiet

When I have permission to detect, fish, hunt or whatever and Im allowed to take guests, I tell them up front that they cant go to that place without me...never had someone do it when I told them up front but have had it happen when I didn't tell them.

Its a given between us that when invited to hunt a piece of land that its an invite for that time only. Unless the owner of the land says directly to the newly invited person"you can come anytime" you don't go back unless you are with the guy who invited. Its rude, offensive and only shows disrespect, greed and that you lack morals. Whoever it was that posted it was cw22's fault this happened has a distorted view on what's right and wrong, cw22 did right his friend that assumed he had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted is the only one wrong. What a shame to lose a good spot over a jerk.
