1700's bale seal
I just had this ID'd by "Iron Patch" in "what is it" and thought you all would like to see it.
It's a 1700,s bale seal. The picture on the seal is what I believe to be a sailing ship. These interesting token-like pieces,
which were once affixed to bales of fabric or containers of
other commodities, represent the burgeoning trade of the
Colonial and Early Federal eras."Lead seals such as cloth seals and bale seals were widely used
in Europe between the 13th and 19th centuries as a means of
identification and as a component of regulation and quality control."

Very cool piece of history there. What we dig up & think is junk at the times, really turns out to be something neat once we get it cleaned up and examined. Great find.
