Finally Found My 1st Chain Cent I Think!! 1793 Flowing Hair!!!!!!

Was hunting a local school grounds this morning that used to be part of a 200 year old farm. The orginal farm of this town. Dug what I believe is a chain cent but need some opions from some experts. Weighted the coin it weights 11.5 grams and is a little bit bigger then a quarter with twice the thickness. You can clearly see the chain on the back with one cent inside it. On the front you can see the lady facing the right with her pointy hair. Was told some counterfeits were made but am not a expert on these. Missing alot of details but to be in the ground for so long I expect that. If it is truely a chain cent then this would be my best find so far in my short detecting career. Opions are appciated.

It sure looks like the chain cent to me. With that much wear and the heavet patina I would doubt that it is a fake.
It's obviously been in the ground a long time. There are fakes for sale on e**y but they dont have any patina.
There is also a heavily worn original for sale. here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/1793-SHELDON-1-R...item45f3b91900

Good score . According to my 2011 Red Book, they minted 36, 103 of them. I can only see the chain and "United" on the back. There are two types. The first has AMERI. , the second has AMERICA. The AMERI. is worth more. See if you can see anymore letters on the back.

    AMERI. - AG-3- $4,000
    AMERICA - AG-3- $2,750

    Good dig.

I can make out One Cent in the middle and from the position of the lettering, it appears to be the AMERI. version. But it is very hard to tell. Hopefully Don in SJ or Iron Patch can verify it.

Well you can start by taking the word "maybe" out of the title! Without a doubt it is one, shame on the wear, but without a doubt details visible on both sides!! Big Congrats.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pumped. Should I send it to NCS for conservation then NGS for grading? I have it sitting in olive oil atm should I remove it. Don't want to harm it in anyway at all I know this is a once in a lifetime find for me.

Re: Finally Found My 1st Chain Cent I Think!! 1793 Flowing Hair!!!!!!

It might not be a bad idea to remove it from the olive oil. Im am by no means a coin expert, but I have read that some coins are more valuable with the patina on them. I dont know if the olive oil will remove that or not. My thinking is that the coin is already identifiable, and could always be further soaked later if desired. Maybe someone with more knowledge can comment on this.

Keep it out of olive oil. Sop up as much as you can from it. Olive oil is actually ever so slightly acidic. I would personally have put it in peroxide for a few minutes, but don't do anything else to the coin.

Re: Finally Found My 1st Chain Cent I Think!! 1793 Flowing Hair!!!!!!

I saw this coin personally this morning. I can say first hand, that the chain looked much better in person before he put the olive oil on it. That had me doubting its authenticity. I tried turning it every direction to see the bust on the front, but couldn't do it. It had all the right details (letter edge/reeded) and chain. Congrats again, but I thought it might clean up a little better. I'd look into the conservation as I think they might be able to pull some mroe details off it. Definitely, a banner find!

Get that puppy slabbed, I would say without a doubt it is an original, Again get it slabbed, you will be surprised what it will be worth even in that condition.
