    Barbarous Radiate Hoard

    Hi Guys,
Nice to see that you're up and running again - I've missed you!
Ever heard the saying "Be careful of what you wish for"? ..... Well for these past 2 years I've been detecting I've been wishing for a spot where the Romans had been a bit more careless with their money - I think I may have just found it - and it far exceeds what I was wishing for.
Got myself another farm to detect on - not too far from the others where the Roman finds have been few and far between. First day (amongst George III, Victoria, etc. not listed here) were 2 Roman Steel Yard Weights, Cooking Pot fragment and a grubby Roman Bronze:

    Barbarous Radiate Hoard-2-weights-coin-pot.jpg

Second day, 5 Sestertius of Antoninus Pius and Faustina - 4 of them in the same hole! :

    Barbarous Radiate Hoard-all-5.jpg

And on the Third visit BINGO! My fist coin hoard - Over 500 Barbarous Radiates in 1 hole - couldn't believe it.

    Barbarous Radiate Hoard-coin-hoard-david-beard.jpg

    Barbarous Radiate Hoard-few-coins-tn.jpg

I can't photograph them all individually here but I've included some of the nicest. Size varies from some as small as 7mm in diameter to almost 2cm. Mainly bronze but a few with some silver content.
I also found some great bits of pottery, Nene Valley Ware, Samian Ware and Gray Ware:

I knew it needed reporting to the Portable Antiquities Scheme so Monday morning I was on the phone to them. The next step was an organised dig from the museum, and they were there in a matter of days; digging a 2 meter square hole around my original one:

And now the real excitement begins.... The coin count to date is well over a 1000, and there may be enough Gray Ware shards to build an entire pot; which the Museum now think is associated with the hoard. And it gets better - About a foot down, They (we) have now found a floor, or a collapsed wall, indicating a dwelling of some sort - so this post will need adding to as the dig continues and the original hoard continues to expand, Unfortunately though, we are now under 2 foot of snow so can't imagine any more digging this week.
    Will keep you all informed,
    Best wishes.

No, never. Not really settled since it happened - even finding it hard to sleep at night! There's still more to find, still getting signals from beneath the floor / wall - Its all got to come up!

I wonder what the equivalent is here for rarity.... So many factors I'm not sure we could ever decide on an answer. I guess it falls in the category "I've found one, but you probably never will!"

By all means this is beyond banner it should be featured in treasure hunting magazines. Great find congrats you deserve a new detector.
cdltpx is my youtube screen name look there I have lots of favorites on many subjects. I also have a lot of subscribers that I have not thanked a single one of them for subscribing. I figure they subscribed same reason I sub to others to learn from what they find or post.

I think the Museum will be releasing a story to the press as soon as they know for sure what type of building I've discovered - It will need a bit more digging yet, I'm sure the 'Treasure Hunting' magazines will do a story too but not for a few months yet -
    Watch this space!!!
