    Tom's Park Finds 1

    Hey fellow treasure hunters,

I've decided to get a bit more serious with MD'ing and now have set aside atleast one hour each week to hit a park, one thing I've noticed is that I don't know what I'm doing, sure the common sense stuff but I just don't get any decent results, which is very frustrating ... anyhow I'll keep at it.
The park i'm hunting at the moment dates back to the mid 1800's so hopefully I'll find a 1800's coin.. I don't really care what it is but it would make me the happiest man on here.

    Today's finds:
the 2 bottle caps in the bottom left are gold in colour and they register as gold on my metal detector! I was pretty excited to see gold only for it to be a stupid bottle lid, the $2 gold coin was actually a surface find so I really shouldn't have included it, the $1 coin to its right was the best find of the day, .5cent coin is better than a pull tab so I was pretty happy to pull currency out of the ground.
    The rest was binned.

    Tommi,
do not give up. When I started I was told or read that I would need 100 hours on the machine before I would start to become proficient. You will find that the longer that you hunt with your machine the better you will begin to understand what it is truly trying to tell you. The machine does not lie. As you become more adept the better the finds will become.I have been hunting four years and some of my more recent finds I probably would not have dug when I first started. I now dig most everything every time out.

Hello everyone. Long time reader /first time to post but I had to chime in and let Tommi know I can relate to what he is saying. I have used my ace 250 for over a year now and have yet to find the old stuff. I find plenty of recent coins and can definitely tell when my ace is on one by the tone but still nothing older than a 1939 wheat so far.
Harry as for your comment I can see what your saying about digging everything and have tried that also. But that can be frustrating as well after digging one bottle cap after another.
Anyway Ill keep at it and good luck Tommi.

Yep looks like my typical hunt too but I dont let it bother me. Bottle caps no problem, I started to keep the good ones as a mini collection and try to determine how many different brands I find. I have not found anything old and even clad in the parks out here in the boonies is scarce. But every once in awhile something pops up that sparks the interest , an old pliers, even parts of an old red pump oil can that I had to find many pieces of before identifying it. I figure eventually I will find something good but until then I will just enjoy getting out, a little exercise and the follow up investigation of what I found, even the junk. So dont let it get you down, you never know that next plug might just show something shiney.

Surface find? Of course it counts, if you have your metal detector in your hand, or in some parts of the country, at least in your car. Are you saying an arrowhead doesn't count when you are out detecting? I think the votes against that would be many. So, a $2 Aussie=$US how much? Probably more than I have ever found in one pick.

    Thanks for the kind words,

Happy Harry, I haven't given up...(yet lol) just frustrated with my finds. I took your advise and I was out and about today, I hit a church constructed in 1840 and I detected up and down the sides of it, no coins, only a bit of alloy slag (maybe I'm wrong and its silver!) and bit of metal plate..

When i get to a site that I want to detect I basically survey the land by finding the oldest houses / roads / path ways and try to work out where the oldest trees are and detect around the trees and move towards the oldest structures.. if time permits I'll do a full sweep up and down of the land. Good idea? I attached a photo/map - the red is how I hunt, the yellow is where I go around a tree sweeping around the roots, so far trees are the best areas where I find stuff.

    Anyhow,
here are some more finds from today, and my best find to date! 1963 One Dime (what the heck is it doing in Australia?? ) and also my first silver! and the oldest coin I have found and the most expensive item (worth $4 US I read).

High Plains Digger - according to XE $2 AU is worth $1.95 US (was more at the start of the month :P )
Woodsman99, I hear you, sounds like we are in the same boat, today I found something shiney so I'm happy again lol

Hi dunigtod - welcome to the board! sounds like you're also in the same boat with Woodsman99 and I ... I figure it's only a matter of time and when that time comes around, and lady luck smiles down upon us, we will find a penny lol!

Looks to me like youall are doing AOK. The hunting will get better and better.
Research. It's the key. Anyone else using a machine in your park? If so, go to the places....inconvenient,
hard to get to places.....likely as not, the others did not go there.
I've been at this for 35+ years, and still have my bad days.
    Good luck.....keep posting. hikein(Korean)mts
Can't find it if you're watching tv at home, your machine isn't on, and the head of your detector is pointed up!!

Not sure hikeinmts, I was told by some old guy "that I was wasting my time as another metal detectorist has already been here" in one park close by, I have feeling he may of been the 'other metal detectorist' and didn't like me on his turf, though I was no harm as I was just starting out and all I found was an old bullet casing that day.

You're a lucky guy, Korean mountains... now there is some history to be found!
