I Can Honestly Say I Have Never Found One of These Before...
...until today! My metal detecting buddy and I wanted to check a place close to where he had found fired Union shells with the hopes of finding an over-shot. Once we got there all we ended up finding is a bunch of junk and one shell frag. Oh yea, and this...

Alas, it was empty

I'm sure this thing has an interesting story behind how it came to rest out in the middle of the woods! Oh well, it's a neat find, but it's not like I was going to carry it the half mile back to the truck .
Once back to the truck we went to a local park where we had found CW stuff in the past, but after two hours of hunting and three small rain storms later we decided to call it quits for the day. All in all I ended up finding a frag, a small buckle, a strange piece of brass with a knob at each end (any ideas??), and an 1891 IH. My first old coin of 2012! It's not much, but I'm just glad it's not a wheat . Thanks for looking

Was the safe on wheels or are the two ones seen in the first pic part of your "junk" finds?
@MUD(SWAT): Asbestos? Really? This one looks too old to me to have such a coating, or not?

Wow !!! what a find on the safe, looks like an older one to me Ohhhh what a story it could tell,,,,,,,, Take a sled out there and drag it out There used to be a bigger one lying on the ground at an old ghost town here, that I never got,,,regret it now as the whole town is gone due to a large open pit mine , still wonder if someone got it ,,or if it went under a bulldozer

Tear gas, huh? Maybe that's why my eyes started watering when I opened it . And to think, I figured it was because I saw that it was empty .

yaxthri, The safe was on wheels. I actually found one of the wheels at the top of the hill, so it appears that the safe was rolled down the hill in an attempt to dispose of it or break it open. Probably to dispose of it.

lol, I'm not sure I would want to haul that thing out of the woods! If that didn't kill me, the lady would if I brought it home!
Thanks for the reply everyone!!

Cool find.
What are the dimensions of that safe?
I've been scanning my collection of Old Maps and posting them on my site.
The maps show property owner's names, mining claims, parks, schools, etc.
Use 'em if you can!

The safe was about 1 ft wide by 1 1/2 ft tall and about 10 inches deep. The little bugger still weighed about 200 lbs!!
Thanks again for the replies everyone!
