I don't know Marc. They don't pronounce "Boehner" the way I would either.

It's Tuetonic. It takes the sound of the second vowel in line. When the "word" was still in Europe it had those 2 little dots over the "O" (umlaut). When the word came here there was no umlaut so to preserve the sound an "E" was placed after any letters with the umlaut. This makes the sound of the vowel "O" "long". It gets drawn out .

I got no idea what it is, but it would probably be corrupted and pronounced as 'show-nay' in my family. The more cultured in the family would probably say 'shoe-nair'.
