Hi--it looks to me like a Civil War token. Can you either take a better photo of it (use the macro setting on your camera - the one with the little flower icon) or describe the wording and device on the back? John in ID

Ok - it is a Civil War token. During the years immediately before the Civil War, small change with one cent coins in particular were taken out of circulation by hoarders who believed the price of metal would go up. In order to function, many businesses resorted to making tokens of brass that circulated as one cent pieces. They are of two major types, Patriotic and Storecard. This one is one of hundreds of varieties of the Patriotic type, as indicated by the patriotic slogan on the reverse. There are likewise hundreds of types of the storecard type - they carry advertisements for the business that issued them. The Civil War Token Society is the special-interest group formed to study the tokens from this period. Their website is www.cwtsociety.org - their site has some more history on this interesting series. John in ID
