I just wanted to share this great find that my dad made a few months ago with everybody. This token was found in a confederate camp.It is an R7 rarity and will be featured in American digger magazine. He has had a coin "not relic" value given to him by a guy who wrote a book on sutler tokens. If anybody has any more useful info on this coin let me know. Thanks and enjoy!

Thanks! The R7 rarity means there are only 11-15 of these particular tokens known to exist so who knows if there will ever be another one found.

All types of BFOs owned. Especially want White's Arrow; White's Oremaster; Exanimo Spartan Little Monster; Garrett contract Little Monster.
I think what you have is a sutler token issued for a unit of the Union Army.
It is definitely civil war due to the date. A book about them was published but I don't have it. In general the term "Volunteers" was used for units that served through their initial enlistment and then shipped over rather than leave and go back home. If enough people reenlisted the unit stayed and they stayed with it. If not enough people reenlisted then the unit colors and those who wanted to go home went back where they came from and the men who reenlisted were assigned to other units. The only periods where the term was used in the United States were the Civil War and the Spanish American War. great find, siegfried schlagrule
