    NEED A TAG ID PLEASE

Found this tag today at a spot that's been in use since the early 1900's, although the area has been settled since the late 1800's. I've looked around and found one posted just like it but the identification was not very firm so I'm looking for a few more opinions. Thanks in advance!

Is there any information on the tag, wording, shapes, symbols, other than US?

There's nothing else on the tag but the U.S. on the front. The reverse is blank. It's about the size of a quarter. Someone has suggested that it might be a mail bag tag. Anyone know for sure?? I haven't been able to find anything on it.
