Here is a tag that I was told is a dog tag. It says "C.I.Y" or "C.L.Y" at the top and then "Toronto" and "1914"

OH YEAH! That is a great find!

That is a new discovery for Fairfield Co. SC . . . . . currently the oldest reported tag from there was 1925. I will forward your picture to Dr. Bone, and he will reflect this change in the future printings of his book US DOG LICENSE TAGS.

THANKS for sharing!
Neil

I went with my brothers family to a friend of theirs house for a get together. The house was a mid 1800's farm house and they were kind enough to give me permission to detect. Found this next to the driveway near an old garage and barn. This is the first dog tag I've dug. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1432482968.533284.jpg

YEAH ~ great find there! This is a new discovery piece. In the latest edition of Dr. William Bones book US DOG LICENSE TAGS it has 1929 as the oldest reported dog tag from East Haddam CT. I will forward this picture to him so he can update the info in his database and reflect this date of 1909 in the future printings of his book. THANKS for sharing!

Neil, Any ideas on the value of my pieces from page 14 adtag.jpg

I Emailed you better photos of them with the town on them months back, not sure you remember though.

(They look WAY better in hand, both photos are from my phone in a darker room.

That number on the tag does NOT represent how many dogs were registered there. I am not sure why the CT towns started the number system at such a high number ~ most agencies just started at #1.

Wow, that sure seems like a lot of pets for a small town in 1909! :dontknow::laughing7:

Putting prices or values on dog tags is tricky ~ especially dug ones.

There is no price guides or catalogs for dog tags like there is for coins, currency, stamps, etc.

Just like any collectible condition is a big factor. The best thing to do is list 'em on an eBay auction ~ there's plenty of dog tag collectors that will bid 'em up to what they are worth.

Not going to sell them though, considering they are relics from my town, I may put them on loan at the local historical society though at some point...

These are from Victoria B.C., Canada, and environs.. I checked with the head of the archives and he confirmed that the 1878 9 was for the years indicated.. ie 1878 to 1879.. it is my earliest
