Here are two I dug years ago when I lived in Illinois. The first is Dewitt Co., Ill. (doesn't show the state)

OH YEAH! I like that 1940 tag! Listed in the book the oldest known tag for De Witt Co. Ill is dated 1918

The book doesn't list rabies vaccine tags ~ only license and tax tags

Had another one that I had to clean up because it had too many blisters on it.
Kind of a bummer to have to clean it, but it does look better than it did.

Dude! You've found some cool old dog tags!

Currently, the oldest known San Diego tag is dated 1902.

Found this dog registration tag yesterday. My first one. It is from Grundy County, Illinois. Not really old so I don't know if it works for you. Actually, I'm not into dog tag collecting so I'm willing to hear offers for all the ones I find.

Neat old tags, everyone! I have a couple I will try to dig out later. That 1923 Duluth wore through and fell off on it's own. My dog's did the same after about two years but, it was aluminum, as the modern ones are. The old old steel kind would have taken a bit longer I think. Maybe that gives us an idea how long the Duluth had been on the ground?

Hello everybody!!! Here is one from Erie,PA.Erie County 1913...I got a few more from erie and other PA towns, once i find them i'll post or send to email listed.HH ALL !!!
Another from Cameron Co.PA.

Very cool ~ THANKS for sharing! The OK (oldest known) tags for Erie County and Cameron County are both dated 1908! The oldest OK tag for all of PA is from Meadville ~ 1875!!

Did you notice that the Erie Co. tag reads 'DOG TAX', but the Cameron Co. doesn't? I've noticed that alot of the PA counties don't mention 'dog tax' nor 'dog license' on the tag! WEIRD!!! I have a 1917 Lancaster Co. "Dog Tax" with no serial number, but my 1945 Allegheny Co. PA tag has a huge serial number #9738, but doesn't mention 'dog tag' nor 'dog license'.

Cool stuff!
Meadville 1875 WOW !!! love to see that one...HH ALL !!!

Wow! A lot of really OLD & very cool tags on here

I just ran across this thread the other day and the only tag I've found that I thought had "character",
was the 1949 Chicago tag I found last year.

However, I just found my oldest tag this afternoon (from Arlington Heights, IL) . . . at a park
that wasn't built until the 1960's. . . (there must have been some dirt brought in from across town).

While I don't have any tags from the 1800's, I am willing to bet that I have the lowest numbered tag. I found this tag in Nebraska City in 1999, 1922 #1! I also have a close second from my very own yard, a 1921 #3 Moran, KS.

NICE FINDS!!!!

That serial #1 is AWESOME!!! The Oldest known tag for Nebraska City is 1890! And the oldest known tag for Moran KS is 1917. But even your Moran tag is a low serial number ~ #3!! WOW!!!
