Re: t - Shamrock Palace CHAS. DICKEY G/F ?. Need ID

This one is needing quite a bit more research before we can say for sure, but it has long been held to be from Ferdinand, Idaho or nearby (by ID collectors) AND it is listed in the OR book as being from John Day, OR. Plus, there is a chance it could be from Spokane, WA or Butte, MT.

From Census information we find that there was a Charles Dickey, born in 1890, who was the son of Thomas Dickey who was a saloon-keeper in Grangeville in 1900. Grangeville is very close to Ferdinand. Charles went with the family to Spokane when Grangeville went "dry" and he worked as a clerk in a hardware store while his father ran a cigar store in 1910. His younger brother and the father went to Butte, MT and had a cigar store and pool hall in 1920, but Charles appears to have eluded the census-takers in 1920.

In John Day, OR, a different Charles Dickey was manager of a confectionery in 1930.

So far, there is no real evidence that ties the Shamrock Pastime business name to any place, therefore more research needs to be done. Quite a few of these tokens were found years ago in a Grangeville hoard, and I think earler Idaho token collectors got the Ferdinand attribution by talking to "old timers" in the area. Unfortunately, the available references I have seen so far don't show this.
