I have one as well, but it is tough to get into the ground due to the forked point.

Ames or lesche?: I use both

The Ames True Temper is a fantastic value for the price. Better than many diggers. I used one for the first half of the '09 season. It works well in soft, rich soil when the digger is under little stress. The problem I had with it was when I got to the bottom of a deep hole and found a larger target. This sometimes requires a bit of prying with your digging tool to free the object. A bit of modest prying is also needed for popping plugs in harder, drier soil. I began hearing and feeling popping and cracking sounds coming from the handle of the Ames. I'm not talking about trying to remove a stretch of concrete sidewalk with it, I am just talking about typical digging. This is a problem with any tool where plastic is molded to steel. I decided to retire the ames or keep as backup before I found out the hard way which hunt would be it's last. Then I picked up the lesche. For me, this was well worth the extra money spent. Why? The lesche is designed better and much stronger. The farther offset blade pops any plug with ease. The design also allows you to dig a much deeper hole much faster. And also much handier down inside a hole than the ames. The lesche even refills holes much faster and with greater ease. It feels much more solid than the Ames. From a guy who owns both: At $9-14, the Ames True Temper is a must have. Its a very capable digger and better than some pricier digging tools. But the lesche wins hands down. You cant argue with solid construction and a better design for the job. JJ

I agree! I beat the heck out of mine. I have stomped it with my foot, pried with it, and hit many large rocks. Still good as new. I attached a bungie cord to it and my tool belt. It makes it fast and easy to pull out and toss back in my belt pouch. The only problem I have had is in a wooded area. I just unhook it then. Works for me.

I started out with one of these, also tried the Ames and several others. Broke 'em all. Then I got a Hori-hori. Nice thick blade, wooden handle. Cuts, pries, saws through roots. I've used it for 3 years and never even had to sharpen it.

I've had the True Temper tool also and it worked good, but after I bought my Lesche
I gave it to a friend, a couple months later he bought one. My friend went detecting
with his brother in-law and another guy and they bought a Lesche that night.
I've never bent my Lesche and there were a few times I was sure I must have bent it
but I was always surprised to see it was straight as an arrow. I just got the Lesche
shovel and I can't wait to see how it works in those root infested cellar holes.

I bought the True Temper tool at a local hardware store when I first started detecting, I did not want to spend too much in case I was not going to enjoy the hobby, ends up I love to detect and am extremely happy with the tool, it is stainless steel and it is one piece. It can take some real abuse, trust me I put it through it's paces due to the fact that I did not know what I was doing.
    Just one detectorist opinion.

    Re: Best Digging Tool Ever!!!!

I sold that gold ring I found (after advertising for the owner with no luck) and I took $ and a Lesche digger. I have to say that I like the shield on the lesche that protects your hands from slipping onto the blade. With the tool I have that must be the same maker as the True Temper, I've tried to steady it while cutting that "U" in the ground and I've cut myself a few times (I don't learn quick) I'm terrible at the initial cut. I do more damage to myself than I do the grass.
I love the pic with the bungee cord! That's brilliant! I have some of those in stock too!

I was going to post the same thing. It is a very very important feature of the Lesche. My last tool was similar to the first one in the picture that started the thread, minus the funky tip. I never cut my hand bad with it, but a few times I came close to slipping off the handle and when you are gripping it hard, if you slip, the cut can be ugly.

The Lesche is an incredible tool. Things like this make detecting easier and more efficient. Another one to add to your list is the Garrett Pro Pointer - DAMN GOOD.

    ps.. i love my lesche
Don't ever ever ever buy anything from fiskars. I've owned every item they made that could have been useful for md'ing and broke every one of them usualy in the first few days. I don't care about warrantys I just want it to last for at least a month or two. The tool your referring to has completely broke off twice. where the handle and the blade meet is the weakest part of the whole thing and you would think that would be the strongest point.

I got this one. Its the revamped version of the one you pictured. Its also about fifteen bucks more than that as well.
Workin great so far fingers crossed. I like it but I have doubts they all seem to break out of nowhere.
Haven't cut my hand yet either but I could see how that could happen. I recommend gloves. I'm more worried about the glass in the ground than the knife in my hand.

I have the lowes one (I bent it I think last time out, so it's on my list for purchasing a spare! -but it's lasted me a long time now.)- i started with the fiskas walmart version and I broke it in half -warranty or not- I only had it a week, I decided I didn't want another one...the lowes one for $13 has lasted me all this summer. nothing is less fun then calling it a day early because you broke you digging tool and didn't bring a 'spare' tool along...

    Re: It's About Time !

Man, our members are fickle. When I first found this tool two years ago and posted it here in the ToolShed 95% of the relies were that it was rubbish. And 95% laughed at me even suggesting this tool as an alternative to the more expensive big "L". I only met to push it as a cheaper tool for those on a tight budget. I have one now and it hasn't broke in two years. It has a replacement guarantee if it does and has become very popular now that other members have tried it. I never use it for relic hunting but for every other type of metal detecting it is great, like I said two years back.
But like many things used in our hobby some have to carry the best and laugh at those of us who can afford the best. It's not they don't want the best, it's because their budget doesn't allow the best.
And like everything else used from diggers to pin pointers and headphones there are reasonably priced alternatives to the best that just have to be found and then excepted by all detectorests rich and poor. We all have the same hobby, it only the equipment that sets us apart and what get's the same job done and saves some $$$ is fro some the only way to go.
I'm glad to see that many others find these tools as useful as I have and the bashing has subsided. IMHO
