Poor mans water scoop

Don't have the money to buy a good water scoop right now so I thought that I would make a temporary one. Got a galvanized animal food scoop. $8.00 from True Value, drilled some 1/2" holes, a handle from an old broken snow shovel and some hardware. I can't believe how strong it is. The bracket is made of hardened steel. You can put all your weight on it and push it into the sand with your foot and it wont even bend. I might add a foot pad and angle bracket.

Is there a way for you to turn the nuts/bolts and have them facing into the scoop instead of where you place your foot? I bet after a few hunts with that you would tear up the soles of your shoes and possibly cut up your foot.

You get what you pay for, if someone has the skill and the tools they can make their own, but many times the ones made do not work well in the real world or many times they require many mods to make it work properly. If someone is only hunting the wet sand than they may get by with a home made one, but when working in the surf waist to chest deep trying to recover targets you need something that works and works well as you are trying to recover targets in between swells rolling in.

You need a scoop that drains quickly, that withstands a lot of stress as your digging deep holes, and one that will hold the target in when your recovering it...... My primary scoop is the Beach Brute II 8.5"x6"x12" long, if I could find one 10" wide I would buy it....Paid $200 for mine, and I could sell it tomorrow for $125-$150 and I have had it for almost 3 years now and that doesn't count the gold and silver I have recovered with it.....

Next to your detector the most important tool you will have for water detecting is your scoop. When you buy a good scoop you haven't spent and lost the money, you still have it in your hand and can recover 75% or more of what you spent for it years down the road if you wish... I bought the original Beach Brute used when I first started for $100, sold it 3 years later for $75.....

I made one this last weekend from the same scoop found at the local Atwoods (ranch supply store chain)

I used a 3/16 ths bit to pilot and then used a step bit to bore out the holes. Then round filed the burrs away. Took it to Galveston the next day and used it. The rivets started loosening up a little, so I intend to get the wire welder out and tack things.
