If you could design your own digger, what would it look like and how much would you be willing to pay for it?
Mine would be remote controlled, a sharpened blade plate under the bottom about two feet wide and a foot long, at the rear of the plate would be a catch basket with holes in it to let the dirt filter out, and hold onto the finds. You could set the depth you wanted it to dig, would run on a 6 Volt motorcycle battery. I think this would make a good machine for finding arrowheads :coffee2: :dontknow:

I have designed my own hand digger. There are
ready made diggers that are close, but no cigar.

My best one is fabricated from a Craftsman 15
Inch breaker bar,

The second one which works just as well is made
of a 15 inch heavy duty 5/8 inch drive ratchet.

They are unbreakable under heavy use and don't
need sharpening.

These things will dig the toughest, if you can dig
the toughest.

When making one of these,

remember to leave a rounded knob on tha other
end to make tha end of tha handle more rounded
for comfort.

The over all finished length is about 12". About tha
same as tha Fiskars digger.

The "length of blade section (tip to grind blend-out)"?

That is hard to say?

Try using this photograph as a reference,

5-25-4.jpg

Tha handle is about 5" long,

5-25-5.jpg

And yes, the handle of tha ratchet becomes tha
blade of tha digger.

Tha Craftsman makes a 1/16" wider blade because
tha handle is flatter,

But in actual use, I found that makes no difference.

I got this 15" ratchet at a pawn shop for $4.

After three solid hours of grindin, I had it roughed out,

Remember ta keep dunkin it in water ta keep it cool !

Maybe this photo will help show tha subtle shape of
tha blade,

Here is tha plastic dip I used,

5-25-6.jpg

A can is 6 or 7 dollars, and will do a digger, plus a few
other tools. But tha digger takes several coats. Just
keep re-coating until tha handle seems big enough.

It's very durable. Both tha digger and tha handle
coating.

Any questions, feel free to ask,

Tabdog

Here’s a demo of my Arkie Digger,

I can dig 8" and pull a crushed soda can out of a hole I have to
stretch to get it out of. I have an improvement on the screw driver.
It will scoop dry dirt out of a 2" hole. All I need is my Arkie digger
and an electronic pin pointer.

I'll Let Tha Pics Speak For Themselves

I gotta say though, if the police were to come over while you were digging, it would be easily explainable using a fiskar or even the lesche as to what you were doing. But that thing looks like a shank... lol... A very heavy duty and well built one though.

Nice job on the digger.

If I were to use one like it, I fear that my pants would fall down ( since I have have a habit of putting my digger in my back pocket. :laughing7:

As far as the law is concerned, what is the difference between a digger and a knife? I think a Fiskars could just about as much damage as a knife, but how does the law draw the line?

In my opinion I feel that the law see a knife as a weapon no matter how you use it and a hand digger like a fiskars as a digging tool and nothing more.I mean, how many times have you heard of someone being held up and robbed at digger point?...........:laughing7:
It's all in how one looks at it...............................................................

Yes, but that was my question! How does the law look at it. Maybe no one has been held up at digger point, but then maybe the police called it a knife. Some areas have a 3½" law, but a digger is usually much more than that, and if someone was pointing a digger at my head, I wouldnt argue with him and say, "thats not a knife". If a knife is hand made, and a digger are hand made, and both are sharp on one edge, what is the difference?
