Alkaline will last longer than NiCad (and be brighter - NiCads are 1.2v vs. 1.5v for Alkaline). NiMH run longer than NiCad but not as long as Alkaline. Lithium longer than Alkaline and are the best bet if it may be a long time between uses. NiCads (and most rechargeables) self discharge when sitting unused - as much as 1% or even 2% per day.

As an avid hiker/camper/digger, I've found lithium to be the best. They're half the weight, last three times as long, work very well in sub zero temps, but cost twice as much.

Make sure the device is capable if using lithium. Otherwise you may ruin it.

This is a GREAT post, and very good advice! Props!
