My homemade digging tool:
So I finally got around to making something that leaves my garden spade in the dust:

Metal detecting tip of the day: "If you are getting a weak/intermittent signal, don't necessarily give up, its probably just really deep." You might end up glad you dug the spot.

That's a pretty neat, sharp tool! Are you gonna put bicycle grips on the handle?

I might make some more, I'll let u guys know.
As far as a handgrip, I'd like to put a bicycle one on, but I used 1" tubing. Is there any kind of grips that would fit over 1"?

Hehe thanks! Just ordered some from China, hopefully it doesn't take forever to get here.
I'll have to make some more tools with 7/8" handles now...
I'm going to perfect the design and change the settings on my welder so I can make the little gusset & all the welds look nice.

Sweet! I made something similar a few years back. The only major difference is I attached a big flat pommel to the end of the handle for pushing it into hard packed dirt. I dipped the handle in liquid rubber. I'll see if I can find it in my junky garage and post a pic.

I found mine along with the brass probe I made. They are eerily similar. The large pommel really helps the palm of your hand from getting sore.

Ah nice Did you make the blade from 1/8" steel?
Also, is it better to have the serrated edge on the left or right?

Yeah its 1/8" steel. As for the serrated edge, I don't really think it matters, but I could be wrong. I made the serrated edge really sharp so I could cut through small roots easily.

There, I heated it up with oxy/acetylene then threw it in a puddle. Should be nice tempered steel now.
