I had to park my HH digger because I was asked on a number of occasions to leave with my "knife". All explanations that it was a gardening digger used in Japan did no good and was still thought of as being a weapon. My leisch has never had that problem. It is one of the best sod plug tools I have used.

When I said it was one of the best sod tools I was referring to the HH digger and not the leisch. The Leisch bent blade (design) and the engraved note on the blade aids in it not being thought of as a weapon.

I have been using my hori hori knife for 5+ years of metal detecting, and have not once wondered if it would bend or break.

It has seen me through soft sod, clay, rocks, tree roots, and cutting my sandwich in half (less the dirt), and has out performed other diggers I have used.

This is a Canadian store, but I'm sure you can get them State side, or even order from here if you wanted?

I will admit that I would like a bit rounder handle on the top for pushing into the harder ground, but after all these years I may as well just leave it the way it is?

Note that they make two different versions of their knives. The DSR-1K6 is equivalent to AUS-8 (pretty good). They also use 420J2 steel in similar looking but cheaper models. Similar to Buck. "Meh" for hunting knives to be kept sharp but well heat treated certainly good enough to a trowel!

Welll... this picture explains the "length" of the metal under the grip.

IMO... this seems "adequate"... but I like "through" to the / AND a pommel.

Err or shall I say... I prefer a pommel.

With that said I still feel this digger is an excellent tool.

This company has got ... what I feel is... a "grasp" on the "rope"... leading to... / ... in the direction of... a perfect digging tool.

Would love to see them notch up the design(s).

Sheath means a lot as well to me... type rather.

Like I said... the idea / design is IMO... good.

Haven't checked yet, but I believe I read that it's non-magnetic. I'll check when I get off work.

IF they could make this into a larger version... with the blade of the OP pic... this would be bar none. IMO.

The "through" design just... um... "floats my boat". heh

Not that it is needed often... its nice to have the ability to hammer something with the pommel if needed.

I found this Hori Hori for like $18 on Amazon. I kind of like the look of it. Not quite as nice as the $46 one but not bad in my opinion.
