I just signed this petition and urge all of our members to do
likewise. Metal detecting is the healthiest hobby I have ever found
for people of all ages. I have been using a metal detector since
1969 and, in that time, I have taught dozens of people how to
correctly use a detector and how to respect the property they are
searching on. I have also found and returned many lost valuable
items, such as wedding rings, to the owners for no charge.

It's getting terrible all over, I used to hunt a lot of construction sites, razed homes,parks etc..
Now everything is always posted No. TP and fences up. Where it did not used to be this way.
Some states require permits and some are trying to ban it altogether. I've seen M.DETST bring
skid steers and other heavy equipment just to scrape stuff up and hunt. This kind of crap is
ruining it for all of us. Some of these T.R.H. get so damn obsessed and greedy they don't care only about
them selves. I signed the petion and I hope this ban is lifted. It will only get worse if not.

Some of our park areas in Harris County, TX have banned detector use. I have the link for the petition in the State-Texas section and also the Legal Issues section.

We all have to get involved even if just a little bit. Before you know it..... they might be outlawing just owning a detector.

I have signed the petition for Texas State Parks ban, the KY ban and a few others.
If anyone wants to help us here in Harris County and sign our petition here is the link.

Signed the petition........... Thanks for asking.

Didn't they ever consider what we do for the parks:
We leave it cleaner by picking up and removing trash that doesn't belong.
We create a safer enviroment by just being there in case someone encounters trouble or needs help when there is no one else around.
We educate the young that there are other things to do instead of getting involved with drug pushers or doing some other stupid activity like vandalism.
We are a deterent to unlawful activity by just being around.
We can bring our parks back to how they used to be... safe and friendly.
We have an interesting and healthy hobby that others as well as ourselves should have the chance to explore if they so desire.
It's not like we're doing something criminal.
I remember when parks were somewhere to go not an area to stay away from.
It seems like the wrong element would gain by refusing our activity.

This bugs me because i can't tell you how many times i go to a park only to find dog crap,beer bottles and cans,drugs and other kinds of trash in these parks.It's the act of digging a hole that bothers everyone,but its ok to litter,drink,do drugs and let your pets go to the bathroom.If people would open up there eyes and see what's really the problem in these parks then maybe digging a hole and filling it back in wouldn't be such an issue.

I'm sorry about it getting so bad back in the States. I ran into a little of it when I was stationed in Ft. Lee, VA, and was doing some metal detecting in that area. They put all of Ft. Lee off-limits, while I was there.
If it gets too bad, and you have funds to afford a trip out of country, let me know. THing in Korea is GO-GO-GO. All green lights. Of course, can't hunt historical sites, but no problem going into the hills/mts and hunting the trails, old springs, stopping points for traders with pack animals, etc. etc. etc.
You want to do so, let me know, and I will put a hunt or two together for you. Get some old holed coins in your collections. It would be my pleasure.

Petitioning is definitely the way to go... But I'm concerned about the way this one is written. It has threatening overtones instead of appealing. I recall the Texas one posted here earlier, and it outlined all the positive aspects of MDing rather than making threats of loss of tourism dollars.

Not sure if that will go over as well as if you first appealed to them citing all the positives.

Otherwise, I agree the bans are unfair and restrictive to responsible MDers like us and should not be in place.

I'm serious. And the invite goes to whomever wants to come over. Korea is about as open a country as you might hope to find, and one of the
safest to travel/live in. It has it's share of bad nuts, but compared with the States, it is a piece of cake.
Had a terrible oil spill about 35 km's from here.....really hurt the local seaside economies in this part of Korea. But, the Koreans scraped off the top
2 or so feet of sand.....and many of the beaches never, never have had a metal detector on them. And, they do not sell detectors over here. Have had a few Koreans whom I have taken out with me to hunt some of the older coins, and they have been amazed at what I find. It never enters their minds that the things/old coins/artifacts are there. And I stay away from any site that has a significant historical background. For sure, don't get some of the higher prized things.....but they do have laws prohibiting hunting archeological sites, and there are so many other sites that are open to hunting, I don't need to go getting myself in trouble by being stupid, and not respecting these people.
If any of you really get interested, I can give you bus schedules to get to my home city.....not hard at all, and their one international airport has several counters that have excellant English speakers. And, I own a small school, but plenty of space to throw a sleeping bag down, and great food within walking distance....and a free ride up into the hills. Couldn't guarantee an everyday hunt, as I have to work for a living , but on Saturdays we could burn ourselves out. And then a person could get around quite easily, rent car, or by bus, and hike......Not that hard.
Let me know.....I'm serious, if you get the chance.....and, of course, you pay your own expenses, but I will ask for no funds.....just good company.

Yes the FMDAC has been assisting since we first heard of it. Check the thread a couple down from this one.
