    WV state property

I recently asked permission to M.D. on the Weston State Hospital land in Weston, WV. This is an older mental hospital built in the 1800s. It is the largest hand cut stone building in North America. The State is going to auction off the property on August 29, 2007. http://www.kirkbridebuildings.com/buildings/weston.html Just think whats buried in that virgin ground!!!!

Below is the email I sent asking permission:

Hello, my name is Greg Streets. I am an avid metal detectorist from the area. I would like to know if it would be possible to gain permission to metal detect the campus around the Weston State hospital before it is sold. I only dig grass plug holes and replace all of the dirt and grass plugs, after an item is located and recoverd. Any items that are identifiable to an individual I try to return to that person or their family. Any Items of great historical signifigance, I will donate to the apropriate historical organization, with full credit for the find and donation given to me. Any valuables not identifiable to an individual or any money old or new I would keep. Also any garbage I find (pop tabs, cans, un-identifiable junk) I remove and dispose of it properly.

    States reply:

We've received previous requests to metal detect the property and I've always had to decline. Anything on the site is State property and I don't have the authority to dispose of it. Sorry

I think that may sum it up about M.D.ing on WV State property....

    Greg

When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.

    Re: WV state property

This brings to mind a hospital I detected in Riverside, CA. It was a 1920s hospital that sat vacant for a few years, pending demolition. I just "helped myself" and hit the lawns that surrounded it, and found many old coins (wheaties, etc...). A security guard came up and asked me what I was doing. I said "looking for old coins" He just shrugged his shoulders and drove away. (since I wasn't inside the buildings). Moral of the story?: Sometimes no one cares till you ask.
Metal detecting is my one worldy vice!
