Re: Plummer's Booty (Montana)

This story is full of holes. The vigilantes were after Henry Plummer because he insisted that the people rounded up by the posse be held and given a fair trial. The Posse didnt want to hold trials. Almost every time the road agents struck, Plummer was escorting other shipments due to the robberies and hold ups. The man that named Plummer as the leader lied. He had a grudge on Plummer for his role in an incident in California. Plummer was in prison for killing a man in a gunfight over a woman and after he got pardoned, he got in another incident that left a man dead and that man was Plummer's accusers relation. I forget how they were related. When the posse went after Plummer, he had been laid up sick with TB he got in prison in CA. The legend of him stating he could give them his weight in gold is another lie. It was made up by the posse to jusify what they had done. The territorial governer was after the vigilantes and wanted to end their reign of terror. Its also important to note that an inquiry was held in the 1990's and it concluded that Henry Plummer was likely not guilty. There were a couple of hold-outs wanting proof of his innocence and not remembering innocent until proven guilty. Basically, there is not one shred of credible evidence proving him guilty. The only coincidence is the road agents robberies ended after the 22 or 23 men were hanged. Either the agents, all or in part, were hanged or some were hanged and the rest got out of town. If Plummer had any gold buried out there, its because he was a prospector. He went to Montana to prospect and ironically, the road agents he was supposedly leading tried to rob him. He saw them coming and got the jump on them and laid them out. The town had just lost their sheriff to the road agents and they voted Henry Plummer as Sheriff. He declined and they talked him into it but not until he had disclosed his dealings in California. They wanted him as Sheriff anyways. He had a prospector buddy that was with him in CA and traveled with him to Montana after his pardon and release. I dont protest his guilt because I am related, if he did the crime, he swings with the rest. I do so because its an injustice and I hate seeing injustices go unchallenged. The only thing Henry Plummer did wrong was want a fair trial for the accused that the vigilantes brought in. They got tired of the slow wheels of justice and decided Henry must be protecting the agents and therefore was the leader. Both of the noose confessions were false or fabricated by the vigilantes.

some of the gold was found, the two men who found the box in the early 1900's mentioned in that video, a kettle full of gold coins found on an island in the Clark Fork river near Missoula in the 1930's and saddlebags full of gold ingots found at Sun River in 1890 mentioned here pages 87-97

Buried Treasures of the Rocky Mountain West: Legends of Lost Mines, Train ... - W. C. Jameson - Google Books

there is supposedly more gold around Robbers Roost than has never been found mentioned here

Hidden & Lost Gold / Silver Treasure in Montana

the story of Henry Plummer is fascinating, I remember seeing Clubfoot Georges club foot on display at Virginia City when I was 9, I can't believe this has never been made into a movie

I hesitate to comment about this story, because I have not looked at the original poster's video.

wx5jcp's post posits many things, but offers no facts or citations. I have learned not to trust such posts.

No one seems to have mentioned Dimsdale's Vigilantes of Montana as a beginning point. Or Henry Plummer. Or Plummer Gang.

There are so many stories of treasure associated with the so-called Plummer Gang that keeping the leads straight is difficult. Timelines seem important to me. Make sure you have an idea of who the gang members were, and how far-flung the gang had ties to. Gang is said to have had a secret code for sending messages between gang members.

Seen some stories in the newspaper in Idaho County about Henry Plummer and his dealings as sheriff in that neck of the woods. He had to flee because they were on to his activities. Whether or not it was all a fabrication is yet to be seen, but there is sure a lot of stories about him being a bad dude.

Hi KK did you take the video down? Would like to see it.

No, I guess for some strange reason the person who put it on Youtube took it off. Who knows why.

Hello,

My name is Jennifer Sheeran, I am a producer for the Travel Channel original series EXPEDITION UNKNOWN. The show is hosted by Josh Gates who is a life adventurer with a degree in archeology. The show follows Gates as he investigates iconic mysteries around the world.

Our team is currently in preparation for our 3rd Season. We are very interested in doing a story on Plummer's Gold. I would greatly appreciate if anyone can put me in contact with someone who is currently researching this subject. If there is anyone that you feel would be a good fit for our programs please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Thank you,
Jennifer

Have to bring this one to the top, I want to read this whole thread. But I have found proof Plummer was guilty in a journal of another person from Bannack. The journal was to remain private, but was published years later.

I believe they might be using info from a book that was out in the 90's that tried to prove Plummer was innocent. Now in 2006 when Falcon press was thinking of picking up my book on Montana Treasure Stories, they wanted double word count no maps and Plummer to be innocent. Needless to say they are still waiting 12 years later. We are close to releasing another book that focuses on just Beaverhead and Madison counties lost treasures.

I see that you obtained enough research to do the show. I love the show. Josh is really great. Turns out Plummer so called friend double crossed him.
