If youre interested in exploring and treasure hunting, this little known but intriguing gravesite may be right up your alley. Its hidden somewhere on the slopes of Deer mountain, not far from wilsons mills. whats intriguing about it? First the location in the deep north woods, second its size, the tomb is gigantic. Finally what it contains is an entire B-17 Flying fortress. Back in 1944 it took off with a full crew on its way to england. Its flight path took it just north of wilsons mills. But as it approached Deer mountain, something happened. It lost altitude and crashed. No one survived. A military team went into the dense woods to retrieve the bodies. the plane itself was far to large to haul out.So they commandeered a bulldozer from a nearby logging operation, excavated a huge trench, pushed the bombers remains into the hole and covered it up. But perhaps they worked to quickly. Even today elderly residents of wilsons mills claim they hiked up to the scene after the military left. They found unused parachutes, metal scraps, tubing. Then somebody made a sickening discovery, a severed limb, and then another. The outcry provoked a second more thorough cleanup. But the bulk of the plane is still there buried, overgrown. The buried bomber is somewhere on Deer mountain on the side facing the wilsons mills and aziscoos dam.
