Treasure from a late 1600s trading post

I’ve read about this over the years, and just found a reference on a map from 1875 and a newspaper article from 1969.
There’s also a lot of good info on it in the book “Bend in the River” by John Pendergast, (1996 Merrimack River Press).

Basically the story is that a guy name Cromwell had a trading post in the 1600s and regularly ripped off the local Indians and the local whites. Once everyone realized it, he skipped town and went back to England, yet for years boasted about having buried many caches of gold coins in the area of the trading post.
Two caches have been found so far.

On the map, look where the Merrimack River enters Massachusetts from New Hampshire:

I've been scanning my collection of Old Maps and posting them on my site.
The maps show property owner's names, mining claims, parks, schools, etc.
    Use 'em if you can!
