Minnesota Stagecoach Robbery?

As the 'story' goes...

Indians had robbed a stagecoach of two chests of gold bars (near what is now St. Cloud), and headed north along the Mississippi heading for Crow Wing County. The 'law' was near, and thus, as it goes, the chests disappeared, either by tossing them in the river, or splitting up the bars amongst them. Either way, they never made their destination nor were they ever found.

Has anyone heard this before? I just heard it on Monday. Where to you begin to do the research on this?

I would start by finding out the name of any Stage Cos. in that area, then see if there was a robbery ?


Stagecoach Robberies were quite common back then. Wells Fargo alone reported 347 attempted & Actual Robberies between 1870-84.
& 8 Trains. Totals= 226 convictions & $415,312.55 Stolen.

Last Robbery: 1908, Rawhide- Manhatten Run (Nev?)

Thanks for the info! I will do just that. I suppose the best thing to do is to start at the St. Cloud library...history section.

Even if I did come up with the info....there is about 70 miles between St. Cloud and Crow Wing County....of land and river! hahahaha But you never know...right?
