I just got around to Trying to do the math & I think there may be a typo in the story.
Maybe should be $95.00 ?

is that $9,500 = to 1900 $5.00 gold pieces in a jug

Using 8.3600g. each if 1839 $5.00 Gold Coin. just to get an Average Weight.

unless I did the math wrong, Which is Highly possible
growing up in PA, & blowing off School :tongue3:

I think That's a 300 Lb bottle of Brandy ?

Of course they May be going on collector Value depending on what The gold coins were.

Hi Jeff, one of my favorite stories in my files, thanks for posting. I'm 95% sure there is no more there.

My partner and I searched his entire property. Didn't use metal detectors, used "other equip". We DID find an unusual piece of metal. It was mostly tin but had some lead and silver mixed with it. about a foot long x 6 in wide and very thin and flat. Couple inches below surface.

We also found a vein of silver! VERY small specks running for about 6 ft mixed into the Georgia clay. Wouldn't be worth trying to recover, but I wonder if it is part of a larger vein?

Bottom line is, looks like he found all of grand papi's money, I think the story is true, but you're right, the AMOUNT found might be off because i'm sure they were talking about face value. Papers of those times usually pointed out the fact if they were talking about CURRENT value.
