Mud Lake, now Jefferson Reservoir, was much different when the “treasure” was thrown in the lake (or buried nearby, depending on the version preferred). Earthen dikes and berms now surround the once shallow lake, making it part of an extensive regional system of irrigation water sources. Which of the several small connected ponds that originally made Mud Lake is actually related to the treasure story, in my opinion, is no longer known.

Time for more coffee.

Yup....Mud Lake is only 60 miles from me. I used to flyfish it for largemouth back in the '90's. Never bothered looking for the buried gold.
