I came across this article in a book on possible Indiana cache sites. I live in Indiana so always look hard into stuff here. I am not sure whether the story is true of course but I do not the name is wrong. It is Abner Mills not Amos Mills. The article was written April 14, 1887 and Abner Mills died April 4th 1887. After looking at plat maps from 1855 and later in 1860s of decature township its the only Mills in the township. That combined with his death date makes it seem very likely the property is the one I have circled in these pics. As of 2021 the area has been developed so much. I of course am still gonna go look but I think this one if it was there and they missed it was found by someone else years later while the area was developed. decaturetownship1850splat.jpg decaturetownship1866platclose.jpg decaturtownshipplat1866far.jpg AbnerMillsObit.jpg

Sorry Abner Doesn't hold much Weight .
it is possible the Map Maker Scribbled the Name
and the printer read it wrong or Abner was his Relative.
The location could still be correct . just don't throw Amos away in your research :treasurechest:

A follow-up to this thread:

I found what I believe to be Amos H Mills land. Obtained landowner's permission and waited for the beans to be harvested, that was last Monday. I hunted it last Tuesday and yesterday in the areas around structures that were shown on maps. The structure on older map (1866), I believe was a barn and house from the items I found. Yesterday, I hunted the structures shown on the 1889 map. It was a newer house and probably a large workshop by the debris found. Extremely trashy. No cache located.

FYI, if anyone is interested in this site. Landowner has sold this property (closing soon) to a land developer and it will become a housing community soon. Would be nice to hunt it again after the bulldozers get done.

I did find this nice Indian Celt, though.
