You have a good memory.
I am from LaPorte, Ind. where the Gunness Farm was and where she buried all the victims bodies including her own kids!
My Great-Grandfather worked for a hardware store in town that put up the fences on the Gunness property. He also knew the photographer that took the photos the days following the Gunness fire, and the discovery of all the bodies. I have a large photo album of ORIGINAL pictures that were handed down to me from my father. Attached are just a few of the photos (some graphic). Many books have been written about Belle over the years, including the one my great-grandfather helped with back in the 1950's - "The Truth About Belle Gunness".
As you can see, I've collected a few Gunness items over the years including: books, original newspapers, postcards, etc.
I even created the Belle Gunness Christmas card to send to me friends and family that know of Gunness. Sick humor, I know.

There is a lot going on with Belle Gunness and the history right now.
Next April marks the 100 anniversary of the Gunness fire in 1908. The LaPorte Historical Society and the LP Museum are already planning for it.
Just two weeks ago, after being buried for 100 years, the body of the headless woman that is supposed to be Belle was dug up in a Chicago cemetery to have DNA testing done on it. They will be using the DNA from the siliva off some original love letters that Gunness mailed out to some victims. After 100 years, we will hopefully find out if the headless body buried with her children is really that of Belle Gunness. It is said that she planted the headless body in the house, set fire to the house, and escaped that night by train.

I will "dig up" more info if anyone is interested.
There is supposed to be a movie being produced about Belle Gunness too. I can't wait.
Sorry for the long-winded post, but I have followed the Gunness story since I was young.

Wow...gruesome but very interesting....and Modernminer...I do like your Christmas Card .....Very interesting bit of history you have collected.
I dont know if I could build a house on top of a site like that....but I could hunt it. I would think that with all the spectators coming there after the murders that there might be things .

I bet you're right. With people coming from all over the U.S. to witness that event, there HAS to be a lot of dropped items (coins, jewelry, etc.). Maybe even a few ax heads laying around?
Next time I go back to LP, I may go visit the owners. My buddy said they are friends of his daughter that own the property now.

Honestly, I have never asked permission. When I lived back in LP I was not into metal detecting then.
It couldn't hurt to go knock on the door and axe ask.
If any of you TN members live around LP, you should give it a try. Honestly, anything that you would dig up on that spot would be historical. I saw some pieces of Belle's wood shed sell on E-bay for big $ a few years ago. They were bought at a local auction there in LP, and then put up on E-bay. They had peoples (spectators) names and initials carved into them from the days the bodies were being dug up.
If anyone goes to ask permission to MD, let us know how you make out.

actually at that place I would Definately never consider Knocking.


Odds are they get Pested regularly especially on anniversaries by media.
and Ghost Hunters / psychics, etc.

However I would try to catch them doing Yard work,
make sure I have 2 6 Packs. one beer one soda in a Cooler in your trunk
& confront them
in the middle of a hot day.

walk up & start a conversation, They will
probably be ready for a break. & During the
conversation on history (Make sure you are carrying
some Copies of Reseach. Photos, old Maps of the Property,
Etc. that you can gift to them if they seem intrested enough) Also apologize for stopping him/her from their work,
and hope one says it was time. Then say "Would you like a Beer ? Soda ?"
By the time your done Bragging how much the History & Property Intrests you say
"The reason I Am so intrested is" and then go into
Your Hobby and How much it would intrest you to see what's there, and
Follow with whatever it takes to Meet their conditions if any, & Get that Permission.

Or a Mutual Friend would be great

I know I'm going back in April, but possibly Jan. too. Probably too cold to MD, but I may go speak to them. I have a friend that knows the family, and I'm sure he would go with me. Even if this place has been detected before, I'm sure there has to be more there. If I can uncover finds still like I have been, such as the Spanish silver piece & CW relics on an 1830's property, there has to be stuff left on that early 1900's Gunness farm.
Now you got me all excited about this!

Like ModernMiner, I used to live in LaPorte from 1973-80. Actually I lived smack between LaPorte and Michigan City off of Johnson Rd. My stepmother's family are long-time LaPorte County residents. I remember being shown where Belle Gunness' house was. I couldn't find it nowadays though, it's been about 28 years! I'm surprised that somebody actually built anything on that property! I remember the Belle Gunness exhibit that was in the LaPorte Museum which was located in the basement of the big red sandstone County Courthouse during the time I lived in LaPorte. Pretty creepy as I remember it, but that was through the eyes of a 10-yr-old. I once saw a bit about Belle Gunness on one of the documentary channels that theorized that she went west and died in California under an assumed name.

The "other" haunted house in LaPorte (if it's still standing) is the old Rumely House near Boston Middle School. I attended Boston when it was still known as "Boston Junior High School" and I remember that house and how sometimes it looked like someone was gazing out a window on the 3rd floor. The Rumely's made their fortune from farm equipment and were responsible for one of America's first mass-produced tractors powered by an internal combustion engine. This tractor was known as the Rumely "Oil-Pull" and many are still running today. They later got in a bit over their heads by acquiring Avery Farm Implement Co and eventually sold out to Allis-Chalmers who built a huge plant in LaPorte which has since shut down.

Now that I think more about it, there's a lot of good detecting spots around LaPorte. I haven't been down there in a very long time. I oughta head down there after I get home from Iraq!

I remember the creepy Rumley house too. The old lady had mannequins dressed up and sitting around a large dining room table to make it look like people where there. She must have been scared or senile?
Someone has bought the place and really made it nice now.
They also just leveled the old Allis Chalmers plant to make room for a new development. My buddy in LP gave me one of the white bricks off the old chimney that spelled out "Allis Chalmers", and one brink from the entrance road.
There are a LOT of old spot to detect in LP.
