A lot of this doesn't make sense...the Wichita moutains are in SW Oklahoma...Arkansas City is in SE/S central Kansas (the Ouachita Mountains are nearby, however, in eastern OK...). The Spaniards were in the OK/KS area in the 1600's...at that time the Shawnee were in and around Kentucky, and the Osages were located in far eastern Kansas and western Missouri, though the Osage did have a major trail (Black Dog Trail) passing along the area of the current OK/KS border. The Osages were moved to the present site of their reservation in the late 1860's (present day Osage County, OK). The only known Natives of the area at that time (1600's) were groups associated with the Wichita Tribe, (called "Rayados" by the Spanish), and another group know as the "Escanjaques", enemies of the Rayados. There was a big fight between the Escanjaques and the Spanish (approx. 60 Spanish soldiers) near Arkansas City in 1601, because the Spanish refused to help them fight the Rayados. The Wichita lived in one of the largest Native cities in North America (possibly larger than Cahokia), near present Arkansas City, the recently-discovered (2014) city of Etzanoa. The Wichita migrated into central OK sometime during the 1700s. This newspaper story appears to be simply a story passed down over a couple hundred years with some tantalizing imbellishments thrown in...
