sign of the times. seemed everybody and their brother
buried their money.
perhaps a carry over thought, burned into their brains, from the days of the Civil War.from stories of
soldiers robbing & burning whole towns.
and perhaps home burglary crime, and home invasion was more rampant back then.
only the truly paranoid didn't have someone they trusted
in case they should die.

and of course Banks were not so trustworthy back then. Correct me if I'm wrong,
I never read the History of Banking. but
I don't think banked money was Backed by the Federal Government till after the Depression.
I'd imagine more then one bank was robbed by it's owner.
