Re: golden bell
This one does actually exists. I have talked to the elders at the Jemez Pueblo and they would like to get it back. But as in a lot of things the information contained in this newspaper account is rather inaccurate. There were many mines in the mountains between the Jemez Pueblo on the west and the Cochiti Pueblo on the east in which the Indians were subjected to slavery to work in the mines. One such area, the Blanding district, was very rich, but was actually passed over by the Spanish because of the Telluric nature of the ores. South of there the ores are free milling. The southern end of Jemez contains many small but high grade ore bodies. On the west of the Jemez Mt's near Holy Ghost Springs gold bearing veins were found that ran $800 to $1000 in gold per ton. North of Cuba, NM, there are many veins of siliceous gold and silver that were mined primarily for smelter feed and paid well for their gold and silver content.
Somewhere in the Naciemento Mountains, east of Cuba, NM, the Dominician padres were transporting a large south to Mexico City during the Pueblo Revolt, when they were massacred by the Indians and the treasure buried. It is thought that it's approximately value today is $80,000,000 to $90,000,000. A lot of zeros. The Spanish also use to mine a great of copper east of Cuba.
It is a very interesting area.

Re: golden bell
G'day Shecker, would you clarify the dropped word/s in the 2nd paragraph
after 'large' before 'south'?
If you meant to mention a bell do you mean a gold plated brass bell?
If you are saying "Dominician" padres were using native slaves to transport
__________ to Mexico and were overtaken by revolters, they managed to
bury a large object in mountaious terrain before certain death.
Was the newspaper article incorrect in stating Franciscan Friars were in charge
of mining activities at Jemez Pueblo?
I am very interested in this topic so if you will provide more details.
Thank you for bringing this story to our attention.

Re: golden bell
A gold plated bell seems more logical as a gold bell would have very poor sound qualities . Jim

Re: golden bell
Yeah Jim I don't think a solid gold bell would make as good a
GONG as a brass one.

Re: golden bell
1..WHO ??
Said anything about the bell being gold plated ??
2..The "Tumacacori Bell" Convoy was "hit" by a raiding party of Indians
All but one of the Spanish were killed
He escaped, although wounded, the insuing battle
He watched as the indians hid the "Bell" in a shallow gully
He made his way back to the mission, where he died, before making a complete map of the burial site

Re: golden bell
So what was it made of? You stated it was gold/brass, etc.
A wooden scaffold doesn't prove a golden bell was once there.

Re: golden bell
I inherited a brass bell that my Mom sued to call Dad in to supper. A rope was
used to pull a wheel that swung the bell. It makes a loud but unmelodious sound.
I figure good bell makers add a secret ingrediant to the metal while casting to
achieve a heavenly peal that brings the sinner to his knees.

Re: golden bell
Who did your Mom sue to get that bell to call your Dad to dinner? (Just a little jocularity.)
