Hey I know this is an old thread but would the Bladenzburg the article is referring to be the modern day Bladensboro? I haven't found any Bladenzburg on any of the old maps archives, only bladen county and bladensboro.

It is, there's a "Big Swamp" just west of Bladenboro. I've tried to research this but I cant find any old property records that would give a good idea of where it is.

While I havent ever been able to find a Joel H. Ester and son in Bladen County at that time, there was a Joel Hester, who had a son of the same name. Makes me wonder if the story had a typo.

Part of me almost wants to take the kayak down there and just start detecting every little hump that sticks out of the swamp. The only issue is what was an islet 200 years ago, may not be an islet anymore.
