This article first appeared in this format from The New York Times of March 7, 1909, Sunday, p. 1.

Here is another reference:

I have so far been unable to find a reference to Richard Cornett in Portland, Oregon in 1909. It seems possible that he was living near Portland, but the article did not want to let others know exactly where. Seems a little devious for The Times, but maybe they were developing a sense of propriety in identifying a particular person at a particular place for a particular time.

I will do more research in local newspaper archives, and post later. In 1909 of course, there was no such thing as a metal detector. If the area is still rural, there might be a chance of recovering more gold.

Have been unable to find any further information on this topic at this time. What is truly unusual is that I was unable to find anything in The Oregonian, which was the largest newspaper on the west coast at that time.

Found this in the Coos Bay Times, March 10, 1909. It's kinda funny that a local paper picked it up three days after the New York Times.

Thanks, Jeffro! I suspected there must have been another source for this cache. Didn't realize it was found so close to home. I have a brother who lives in Milwaukie.
