Actually, that should be Yaquina, Oregon. Now Newport, this story, along with other similar stories are now lore for the area. Different versions of this story have the area near South Beach, the area now known as Bayfront, and even as far upriver as Toledo, and a few places in between. The closest I have ever seen to source documents is a rewrite from a Salem, Oregon paper purported to be from 1899. Personally, I have found nothing to corroborate any of the stories. Still, it is another one to print out for the file.
