They MAY be relics of the last glacial regression. Not far from Tioga I find Vermont granite and anthracite coal, none of which are native to there.

The other local lore is that giants were discovered when the Tioga Point Museum was built. I lived in Athens, which was the old Tioga Point, just a couple of miles from Spanish Hill. Across from the Museum was the site of a 19th century school, now long gone. Detecting that area turned up many coins, musket balls, a lock to a flintlock musket, buttons, &c. The Sullivan & Clinton Expedition camped there during the Rev. War.
