Re: Maximillian's Treasure: Found?

Greetings,

Maximillian's treasure was removed from its original hiding place by Jesse James and a group of Knights of the Gold Circle men not too long after it was hidden.

Maximillian survived his firing squad execution and had his life saved through the surgical efforts of Dr. Frank James. Though he was crippled for life by the experience he, being a fellow Scottish-Rite Mason, was helped out of Mexico by the Golden Circle and taken to East Texas near Gladewater.

He then paid the Golden Circle 10 million dollars to recover his hidden treasure and bring it to him which they did. The former French ruler of Mexico then took the alias of John B. Maxey and became a very successful E. Texas timberman. His descendants still populate the area of E. Texas today.

As incredible as it sounds, this is the TRUE story of what happened to Maximillian's treasure.... he used what was left to set himself up in the timber business.

How does one come to this conclusion that John B. Maxey was the Hapsburg Maximillian?

Tim,
Welcome to Treasure Net !!
IMHO, 'An Old Pro' presented an adventurous story of pure fiction.
More realistically, the Treasury of Mexico at that time was exhausted. To suggest that ten million dollars was given by "Max" to anyone is.......(use your own word).
History reflects Max died by firing squad after being hit 6 times. A recap of that event and what happened immediately following Max's execution can be found here:
History Curriculum Homeschool | Heritage History presents Maximilian in Mexico by George Upton
You can then be the judge as to the credibility of either rendition.

who knows, i think the treasure is probably still out here in west Texas. I haven't read a lot on the subject but i grew up in this area, south of where some say it is hidden. Del Rio, TX. I've explored the area along the Pecos, Devils, and Rio grande rivers since i was a child and believe me, if there ever was a place to hide treasure this would be the area to hide it in. There are so many ravines, canyons, draws, with caves, fissures, etc. that it would take a lifetime to thoroghly explore a fraction of them. Not to mention the hostility of the emvironment here, the heat, very little water, very rough terrain, it is a beautiful place but very inhospitable. You can easily bel injured, get lost or die out here. I would have to say that i believe there are probably several caches or "treasures" hidden in the vast hills, canyons and desert in southwest Texas. I've heard stories of cavalry payloads hidden in flour barrels being stolen, hidden, and never recovered. I also heard a story about maximilian's gold being hidden somewhere along the Pecos river canyons only 60 miles from here. I believe a popular site where some believe it is hidden is called castle gap near Crane, TX. I personally think it is too wide open in that area. The pecos and Devils River canyons seem to be a much better place. Wish i had more time to research.

I knew Cliff Newland

In doing some long-distance research, on-line, I read a claim attributed to former treasure hunter, Cliff Newland, that Maximillian's treasure had been found "years ago." Is anyone familiar with this TH'er, andhas anyuone also heard this claim?

I knew Cliff Newland well. I was a kid and me and him were good friends and had many adventures. I was about 10-11 years old and he was around 85-90 in 1978. His son and my dad grew up together. I know the area he hunted very well. If you want to know more give me a shout. He always insisted the gold was there...he was not really a "dreamer" type either....therfore I've always believed it's there...I'm probably wrong....

Hello all,

I'm by no means a treasure hunter but love the stories and history behind the lost treasure of Maximilian. Can anyone tell me what the treasure consisted of? If it were found, what items could be identified?

Thanks

The treasure consisted of 45 large barrels filled 3/4 with gold, jewels and silver. This was the personal fortune of Maximillian which he intended to smuggle out of Mexico back to Europe prior to fleeing himself. He never made it out, but was captured by revolutionary forces. Atop the treasure in the barrels was a layer of flower which was hoped would conceal the contents. The escort accepted the company of a group of former confederate soldiers they hoped would add security to the caravan of carateras. The opposite happened. The rebels discovered the contents slew the guards and drivers the buried the treasure. They were then killed by indians themselves. Since this one is so well known, I would not be surprized if it was found. However, though I'm a long distance away, I research the one's the interest me. I came accross a clue not long ago that is of interest.

The account I have indicates that looking through a windowed rock in line with Castle Mt shows the burial site.
