Millions in Silver Coins Dumped in Manila Bay to Keep it from the Japanese

Just thought I would start this thread on the dumping of US coin into Manila Bay to during WW2 to keep it from falling into Japanese hands. I’m interested if the story of this event is based on fact and if so was it ever recovered…just want to hear everyone’s thoughts on it.. Googled it, and am just posting the first reference I found on it.

SWR where are you? Yes, this is true, also the Japanese used American prisoners of War to dive and recover quite a bit of them. The same applied to Guam, but of a far lessor quantity.

Here is a link to a website offering information on this subject:

Yes I have heard of this hoard, but I also have heard that either a bit has been recovered and/or that as seawater corrodes silver they ended up losing lots of their great appeal. As a result there is a large quantity of older date silver pesos that are apparently hard to come by.

There is a full account of the story in the Reader's Digest book "Secrets & Spies Behind-The-Scenes Stories WWII " published in 1964

Here is a link to a copy on Ebay:
