Although my description says novice, I am not. I read much more than I write.
Here are a few papers from an old file of Chuck Crawford's that are relevant to this thread. I have many more and some pictures of the dig if you are interested.

On February 12, 1963, the US Army began work on excavating the Fort Huachuca Treasure. Ed Atkins and a partner named Hale from Decatur, Ill. were contracted with a 50/50 split by the Army. Ed Atkins' business partner (Bill Shriver) personally explained to Tom Whittle (one of the authors of The Gold House Trilogy) that they recovered over three million (3,000,000) troy ounces of gold from a cave at Fort Huachuca. Together with what he personally knew about Victorio Peak totalled almost 11 million troy ounces of gold.

2.0: SRI International (formerly the Stanford Research Institute - wonder if they went private?) was involved in the "radar probing" of Victorio Peak at the end of March 1977.

I'm late to this party! This isn't a story I've paid much attention to in the past, but it is one of the chapters in W.C. Jameson's "new" book and I'm researching an Amazon review of it.

Thank you very much for that excellent link! Most interesting.

I would like to point out the same link has an account of the US Army's Apache Scouts. I recommend that one, as well! It's a shame the reproduction of the article has the alternating bold and regular type that makes it difficult to read.

How some of these brave men (who saved the lives of a great many of their fellow soldiers) were treated by the US Government after the Geronimo's surrender is a disgrace.

It was recovered secretly by the US Government in 1963. The tunnels were backfilled. When Quest brought Stanford Research Institute (SRI), they did all kinds of Ground Penetrating Radar and ground resistivity tests. They showed tunnels right where Jones said they were, but those tunnels were filled with sediment. No gold.
