Another version that was rumored because Baird was known to have many 1860 20 dollar Liberty Head Double Eagles from the New Orleans mint, that he either discovered a Confederate cache or Davis's hidden trunk with part of the CSA treasury at Yulee's Cottonwood Plantation in nearby Archer, and used Fowler's Bluff and Lafitte as a cover story to keep the Federal government from claiming it as part of the terms of the Confederate surrender.

Jean Laffite died in the 1820's, by most accounts. It would be a thin story to claim he hid 1860 $20 gold pieces.

I'm not saying somebody didn't try it. Just that it might have proven to be a hard sell.

Emmett Baird never claimed the 1860 Double Eagles came from the "treasure" he "discovered" at Fowler's Bluff, nor did he ever mention on how or where he acquired those gold coins. Baird attributed his sudden wealth to the Fowler's Bluff "pirate treasure" he found.
I hope that clarified the statement presented.

The last attempt at Fowler Bluff to recover the alleged Lafitte treasure was in 2012 by Norman Scott and his GLOBAL EXPLORATIONS company, using investors money. The excavation is located behind the TREASURE CAMP restaurant, and the owner was promised half of what is recovered. While GPR showed two objects that Scott claimed were chests, nothing was ever recovered.
