The lake was drained if I remember correctly by cutting a "V" slit in the side of the mountain...
Which caused a flood resulting in all kinds of havoc / deaths...
Then when hoards of workers then dug the mucky bottom... a landslide or ? took many more lives.

Would be worth a research reread... if I can only remember "where" I read it... AND IF this is the same place.

Which... all resulted in belief that the gold was cursed and protected by the gods.

Hence... stopping anyone signing up to help be "workers". heh

Then on a last attempt... rain came and again landslides and refilled it.

There was a documentary called The golden raft of Eldorado or something like that that told about it. I've read about it before that a few places also.

Not worth any lives trying to dig it up. Also there are too many big time drug dealers carrying big guns. I do my treasure hunting in the great state of Connecticut.

It's well known (to the Columbians at any rate) and documented . Some of the bigger treasures from the lake are on permanent exhibition at the Museum of Gold in Bogota, like the Gold Raft.
