    The Letter "A"

In the mid 18th century, 2 people supposibly burried 2 caches in a certain
area. the rumor say they were both burried arround one rock, this rock
has a symble that looks like the letter "A" that the 2 supposibly carved into the rock to mark the the sipposid loction of both caches. My question is what does the symble
of "A" usually mean, would the 2 have burried one cache at rock "A" and another cache at a unknown rock "B"?

The letter "A" sometimes means...Go To. Look carefully at the letter. If the crossbar is tilted in one direction then that may be your direction to follow. If one side is longer than the other, then proceed in that direction. It also depends on which group made the mark.

It was not a group, just two early American friends hiding caches/treasure that they stole.

    Re: The Letter "A"

Let us just suppose that no other symbols are involved. That is to say that this 'A' is the ONLY symbol that marks the cache. If I were to be so simple in making my 'map', the simplest thing I could do would be to make the legs of the 'A' a certain length and let that length represent a known distance to the treasure.

For instance, 1 centimeter = 1 yard or whatever I choose when making the sign. If my sign's legs were 10 cm long, I would bury my cache 10 yards away.

To complicate things, I could select my depth by using the length of the crossbar or I could make matters worse by using the distance between the ends of the two legs.

Got any pictures? I always like to see multiple versions of known signs. oddrock is correct.

    Re: The Letter "A"

In most Cases the letter A as I have come to read it ... is the first letter.
In the Greek alphabet it is Alpha ... The beginning.

When one of the legs is longer than the other it usually points at the start sign or the direction to start.

That is what an A means. Period

He hasn't responded with any details other than rumor, as he heard it. The 'A' can have several meanings. Why nail it down to just one? We haven't even seen a photo.

I haven't been to the site yet, planning on going soon, just trying to figure out a game plan, trying to see if the symbol could take to the location of the cache(s)

It could lead to something of value, such as other signs or the loot itself. I vote for other signs. The leg length, as Thom mentioned, will play a huge factor in it. Any other symbols in close proximity can affect it's meaning.

what i think is that we need to put our minds into that of a 1700's lawyer, what symbols would he know to mark treasure?

Any that he found from books or that he made up himself.

    Re: The Letter "A"

If the individual was simply burying money that he stole, and the A is a clue towards recovering the money, then it could mean just about anything to him. However if he was steeling for a group or cause, and was putting it in the ground for that reason, then there would be a "standard" used so that anyone associated with the group could go back and find it when the time was right. In that case Old Dog is right on the money with this one. The "to" or "go to" thing is in all the books but I've never found it to mean that...at least not in the sense that it gave you vital information. As old dog stated, it will show you the beginning information of your hunt. I have an A which shows the first 4 locations of the layout, it shows what direction to go once you have found the 4th....as well as other subtle information. And in this situation, there is only 1 cache involved.

    Good luck,
    Big Hoss

Here is a picture that was posted a long time back. It is a very good representative of how the "A" is used.
