    Strange writing on a boulder

Picture on post #2. I was hiking on my uncle's land out here in Southern California and came across a large, flat-faced, granite boulder. Upon approaching the boulder, I noticed 4 dark red markings on the side. They were all vertical chain type things. They looked like a series of linked-together figure-8 shapes pointing down. I didn't have my camera with me but I did have my detector as my uncle had told me their are some old cabin foundations near where this boulder is. I detected around the base of the rock and in the immediate area but was unable to find anything.

Any thoughts on what these types of symbols mean? Oh and yes, I got to the old cabin site and found some old barbed wire and cans, but nothing else....yet.

I found a picture on-line of what these look like. They are like this but slightly darker in color:

    Not a clue.
My detector is a needle finder.  The world is my haystack.

Choctaw Indians use a similar pattern to represent the diamond back rattlesnake. Maybe it's a warning that the place has an inordinate number of them

Well, it is pretty rattlesnakey down there. I had one cruise by me about 10 feet away. Thanks for the help!

Possibly a reference in chain(s) of measure to what one seeks or a well in the distance or range of desert ahead without water.
