Found these marks on a tree in association with some other signs from my previous post( http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.p...,371150.0.html ). I just need to ask what they might be or do you guys think they are natural marks?
We kinda think the top mark looks like an eagle with wings spread, one wing going up and one wing going down.
The bottom mark looks like maybe a bow and arrow?
My husband says I see "treasure signs" in every knothole I come across .
Any opinions are welcome and thanks!

Hey Sandcreek:
Neither of these look natural to me. The top one looks like a perching bird; maybe a raptor type and the bottom one looks like one in flight. Are these trail marks to some kind of treasure? I don't know. They could be just some "blaze" art. You know the regimen. Start looking for other marks in the area. Start with the area I circled in red at the base of that tree in the background. That my be an "X" or could just be a couple of sticks that LOOK like the "X" shape. If you were to find a cache of gold bars; I wonder if hubby would start seeing the keys to a new truck in every knot hole. LOL

Thanks for the help, SS.....I just needed to hear some words of encouragment because my inexperience with tree marks makes me second guess myself.
And I told my husband when I bring that "cache" home one of these days, he'll be talking trash out the other side of his mouth .

Maybe so desertmoons--this tree sits kinda at the base of a big hill and up towards the top are some caves. We'll need to explore those further this winter after all the creepy crawly things go into hibernation. We looked around this hill a little bit last winter because one of our other 'pointers' led us in that direction, but never saw these marks for some reason.
I just wasn't sure about the marks on this tree---whether they were something natural or manmade, so I thought I'd get a few opinions.
Thanks!!

Ahhhhh, now Sandcreek, I KNOW you know this (being an Okie girl) that some of those creepy, crawly things will be INSIDE of those caves in cold weather. Be CAREful.

Yes, but the cold weather makes them move a lot s-l-o-w-e-r and they are so much easier to smash with the shovel .
We've got so much ground to cover this winter! Been looking at all our pictures and thinking of all the different places we need to go back over. Like there was this oddball rock out in the middle of a field that looked like a snakes head---we followed the point off of that a little ways and found rifle casings and a horse tack buckle. Just strange things all over the place----We probably look like a bunch of 'tards out there diggin in the middle of nowhere and walking around in cirlces but what fun we've had!

The first photo, above, looks like a dog viewed from directly ABOVE the animal; it's head on the left end. Your compass is sitting on top of it's head.

I thought it looked like a bear.

I never see those dogs or bears that everyone else sees . It always looks like something else entirely to me. The head of this thing looks triangular(like a poisonous snake).
Are you supposed to follow the nose of a bear or dog sign?
Thanks KK and SS.

Sandcreek and KK:
That could very well be a bear. As far as how to use it; you'll need to check in both directions from this rock. Straight out from the nose and straight out from the tail unless there is a sighting line on it to give a compass heading. What you'll be looking for are MORE signs / symbols. One carving does not a treasure trail make (so to speak, LOL), but it can lead you onto one.

It looks to me like the bottom scar is from a fire.
The picture shows a stand old growth of trees, little or no understory.
A simple increment bore of the tree will tell it's age and when that fire occurred.

Plausible
Thanks SWR and Bajahunter--it always helps to know when the signs could be natural. Keeps us on track with the good signs and we won't give too much attention to those that aren't worth messing with.

Re: I guess I'll never know unless I ask
Sandcreek;
I noticed that those "natural scares" are well defined and isolated and have very healthy bark all around them. That's pretty selective fire damage.
As I suggested in a previous post, look for other signs in the area and that bear / dog stone fits the bill. By themselves, those tree marks could easily be slash marks left by cowboys OR Indians for their own reasons, years ago. And they may NOT be.
You mentioned those caves nearby. I know you'll be looking for signs and symbols just outside of those caves and all around them for at least 100 yards or more.
ISN'T THIS FUN

This is so much fun, SS . We just enjoy looking for out of the ordinary stuff.....and if it turns out to be a sign, then its all the more fun. We don't ever get down or mad at any opinions on the things we find and post.
This tree was very isolated, but near enough to some of our other signs to make us wonder if it was part of the equation.
We'll be looking around those caves this winter and doing a whole lot more exploring.

That tree and its scars do have a story to tell.
It can tell you the climate history for that location. It can tell you about fires that burned, or tornadoes that might have toppled trees or torn off branches. It might not be telling you where the the treasure is but to me it's natural history story is just as interesting
Yes it is possible for those scars to be man made. Hard to say by who or why. Your county extension agent might have more info on that stand of timber.
I. like you, enjoy the search. I find something every time I go out. It's not important whether its valuable or not. It might be just a pretty rock, or maybe a petroglyph pecked into the desert varnish, but it is something I found. And that is where the value lies for me.

Thanks Rob--yes, it is the search that is fun for us. To find things left by those long gone and to wonder why they left these things. Also to wonder why someone would carve letters on a rock or if the things we find are pointers for a trail? and to what? Kinda like local history just laying there on the ground, waiting for us to come figure it all out.
Good clean fun .
