    ARKANSASS PETROGLYPHS, NEED HELP

    Hey You All,

My friend has some markings on his property in Arkansas and we are trying to decipher them does anyone have any ideas? I feel that they are Spanish. I have included a drawing because I cannot get the photos to re-size properly.

    Re: ARKANSASS PETROGLYPHS, NEED HELP

    Hi there H_S,

If you are a windows user you can easily resize the photos by opening them in the paint program in your accessories file, and using the tools there to adjust the pixelation size to
a more manageable setting. I know there are several free online graphics programs if you search for them on google as well. Hope that helps a little, thats how I have done it in my posts.

Also, try inserting what you have as single photo PER post. Sometimes it is a matter of file size restriction for uploading as well. (i.e. pictures from a high definition camera.)

The reason I place so much emphasis on the pictures is that there are sometimes subtle information that is missed by drawing, despite the attention to detail while making them.
    There are many knowledgeable people here that I think would be better able to help you if you did.javascript:void(0);

As for myself, I will look into some of my materials and see what I can find concerning what you have submitted in your drawings, and post my findings.

    H_S:
    Welcome to the forum.

Sanguine is right about a good photo being waaaay better than a drawing. These symbols you've presented
do look like Spanish type signs. In my marked up copy, the area circled in red has a total value of "14" and
the arrow-like figure circled in blue might easily be a compass indicator telling us to go north for
14 measurements from that location. Those other figures of dots connected with straight lines could
be maps of the cache layouts with the dots giving depth and the lines connecting them, giving the distances
    to each spot.

Because the Spanish were a little devious in their meanings of symbols, there could be an alternative meaning
to that figure circled in blue. That COULD be a Tobias "T" telling us to go "45" from that spot. In other words,
go northeast for 14 measurements from that spot and not north. You'll have to check both directions for other signs.

Here is a very good example of what sanguine and I were talking
about on the subject of drawings and photos. You'll notice that
your drawing of the "arrow" figure has a short crossbar that crosses
90 degrees to the main shaft, but the PHOTO shows that the crossbar
actually intersects the main shaft at more of an angle.

Also, the "arrowhead" of that piece looks like it does NOT complete a full
oval shape, but at more of a flattened out "C" shape.

    havilah_springs;
That's a very nice find and some good photos. However, I noticed the circle does not have a "cross" in it. It is a five part symbol. The upper two parts are quarter pie shaped, and the lower three are circular. This one symbol gives a entirely different meaning to the whole.

I saw a sign similar to this but have not yet located it. I believe it means five mines sealed, or five caches covered. The only thing I know of that has balls at the ends of arms are church crosses, but I'm not sure how to "read" these ladders.

I think you're onto something good. Good luck.

    Re: ARKANSASS PETROGLYPHS, NEED HELP

Grills is correct about the ladder sign, each rung indicates ten feet in depth
the set of dots indicates 300 walking varas
    the lance indicates dangerous natives
te circle with the face is a sun sign and tells you to turn East as it has no rays
and Bill is corect that the "V" indicates five.
however, the dot on theleg of the "V" is the directional and says to turn and backstep five measures to find the next set of directions.

    Re: ARKANSASS PETROGLYPHS, NEED HELP

I appreciate all of the input, but there is one thing that I forgot to mention. The first photo is the most recent of this site and the lichen (moss) was cleaned of by the property owner. When I visited the site a year ago and photographed the carvings the circle was quartered (easily seen with the naked eye), but whoever removed the lichen removed more than the lichen and changed the sign. As for the other photos the camera angle and lighting appear to be a little missleading, to the best of my memory the cross bar in the arrow / sword / spear / cross was at a true 90 degree angle and the arrowhead / spear point was fully carved out, but the lighting in the photo seams to have changed it's appearance.

    Now some questions:
    1. Could the ladder looking things be "Chicken Ladders"
    2. What is the distance of a "Vara" ?
    3. What does "tag" mean?

Thanks to everyone for your input,

    Rick (Havilah_Springs)

    Re: ARKANSASS PETROGLYPHS, NEED HELP

a ladder is a measure of depth each rung represents 10 Spanish feet.
    very specific.
a vra is 33 Spanish inches or 30 inches as you would measure with a tape.
a Spanish inch is .9 of the inch your tape.

read these threads this is old info and should be standard.

"tag" means that Diggemall is watching this thread. as an interested bystander.

Sorry. don't mean to sound short.
    Welcome to the fray
hope to see more of these fine signs.

    H.S.

THAT LOOKS LIKE A GREAT SITE. LOTS OF POTENTIAL!
I, TOO HAVE A SITE IN ARK. I DON'T HAVE ANY THING ON
MY SITE THAT JUMPS OUT AT ME FROM YOUR PHOTOS
BUT I HAVE SEEN SOME OF YOUR SIGNS, IN PART, IN SOME
OF MY RESEARCH. WHEN I FIND THEM I WILL BE SURE TO SHARE
    WITH YOU.
SOME OF THE HELP MAY SEEM HARD TO UNDERSTAND AT FIRST,
BUT HANG IN THERE. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK ABOUT ANY THING.
MOST OF THE FOLKS HERE ARE VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND SOME
JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON WITH YOU.

    GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS
