I found this not far from my home. It is about 14 inches square. It was in the ground with it's surface even with the surrounding ground. I assume it is formed geologically, but seeing the things I've seen on this sight, I wonder if anyone thinks it is a marking of some kind. I realize it would be very helpful to see it in its natural surroundings, but that isn't possible.

Re: Geologic? or Marking Stone?
Here is a black & white negative of the pic that brings out some more details. There seems to be a LOT of small letters and numbers scattered around the squared center section and they are placed at random places and cocked about. There is a recessed channel that goes around the entire square giving the inner area a raised look.

LOL, yeah, it DOES kinda look like that doesn't it?? Me, too. (no offense). But, putting joking aside;
I'll bet that thing would have an interesting story if it could talk.

Hello friend, for some odd reason stones like that were used several hundred years ago. Ill keep my guesses to my self, but you have a nice find. Unfortunately removing it may have made it just another rock now. I find these stones just off the beaten trail, near water, and usually a few other things. You are not the first person to make off with a possible marker, but i hope next time you take pictures. Good luck.
Could be an old survey marker. All kinds of stones were used for them.
If it is, it shouldn't be moved.
I'll repeat an earlier post re marked stones:
I know a guy who bought a parcel of ground solely because one of his corners was a marked stone fom an 1890's survey of the adjoining parcel. He found it one day while quail hunting and was certain it was some sort of a 'Spanish treasure marker'. Despite an explanation from the land surveyor who prepared his plat, which he didn't believe, he bought the dirt and dug a dozen holes with a backhoe - all empty of course. I guess people believe what they want to, no matter what.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

LOL, good one Steve.
There is also a true story about a pair of brothers who chased an obvious Spanish trail to the edge of a neighbor's property.
The neighbor was adamant about not letting them chase farther.
When the neighbor died in the mid 1970s the brothers bought the property and finished the trail.
(since both of the brothers are passed away I feel it is ok to say this part of the story)
a few months after the purchase they made their recovery. In this fashion paid off the bank and each respective brother started a business.
They also continued to chase Spanish until their deaths. Very quietly sucessful.

Have heard of this but the brothers I spoke of were quite withdrawn when it came to what they found.
Many even atributed the paying off of the note to the businesses they started.
But I have pictures ...
Not that I can or will share.
Just know the last brother to pass was a member here on Tnet.
That is all I have to say about it.
