Churches tended to make their own wine back then. I saw a presentation on TV not long ago on the subject of the "Church and Alcohol" and the folks were saying that back in the Biblical days, wine was the only SAFE thing to drink due to the alcohol content killing the germs in the water. People got sick from the simple act of drinking the water from their wells and streams because any contamination couldn't be spotted until illnesses cropped up. The wine was safe to drink and was even given to the children to have with their meals, too. Drinking alcohol in moderation was not seen as sinful.
