German-- try to put chaulk in the holes and wipe off the excess surrounding them. Or try a piece of paper and pencil, dependng on how big of a rock. If you have the rock at home, use a paint brush and stain, wipe rock like you would a piece of wood.

mc: rock signs

saw a professor take baby powder and blow it off his hand onto a rock carving, it seemed to work alright,,,,,,you can also cover carvings with shaving cream, lay a piece or aluminum foil over area and scrape over foil with a credit card...it will fill in the carving with the shaving cream making it easier to see..it will also leave impression on foil ...this method is great for old unreadable toombstones also.....

If their really fine ,just highlight them with chalk, lightly and photo them.
I've use baby powder, flour, but white chalk does it best and you've more control.
