my best guess is that it is the floor plan of a mine, by the looks of the "green rock" all over the place probably a copper mine.

yilpet,
Get up high with a copy of this symbol.
look at the surrounding trails and find the ones that exactly match this sign, there should be three holes or mines.
If it is the floor plan of a mine there are three major places of interest inside. Be careful when you find it. I had a partner walk right past a lightning bolt , ... Friday.
You can get excited and go too fast.

Consider the shape of the stone it's carved on as well. It may match the aerial shape or view of the mountain and place to stand on that old dog is talking about.
