Are these markings on this tree, that is along the side of an 1800s wagon trail?

This is in North Georgia, along a wagon trail that is on late 19th century maps to about 1905.

Many markers like strange trees and big boulders along trails are placed in locations you leave the trail. Turtles are good, forked trees are good.

Did you see that star or cross that is also on one of the trunks? I believe it must be a carving, or am I seeing things? The area that was hollowed out years ago has the slits below it.
